Happy new year! 2021 has already begun a little strange for most, but myself and Kay are still working away on new things for Hot Pink Music. Our first post back into the new year, as you may be aware if you listen to our radio programme, is our top ten songs from our faves in 2020. This list was ridiculously hard to compile as we wanted to showcase a mixture of local and not so local talent, genres and moods. There were so many amazing songs released last year and to compile a list of only ten was not easy to do, however, this list is full of some brilliant artists and some fabulous songs. We hope that there will be a little something for everyone and that you might just discover your new favourite track!

NUMBER 10:

"Makes Me Sick!" by Honey

This song from amazing singer-songwriter Honey had to make this list. The slight haunting vibe of the music, the clever lyrics and her charming vocals come together to create a really beautiful track. The track feels unique and different from Honey's other songs while definitely being one of my favourites.

NUMBER 9:

"The Soft Apocolypse" by Emma Swift

This single was my first introduction to Emma and her music, finding her through social media. This song is absolutely stunning, the only way I can describe it being "musical perfection." Emma's voice is so beautiful and unique, like nothing I've ever heard before, making for an absolute timeless feel to all her songs. Specifically, this track, with its poetic lyrics and emotional feel is purely divine.

NUMBER 8:

"Break Up Song" by Pink Lemonade

All of Pink Lemonade's tracks are so ingenious and reminiscent of 2000's pop-punk, but this tune, in particular, is so feisty and clever that it couldn't not be on this list. The mood of the song makes me want to dance around my room after a breakup, screaming the lyrics at my ex-boyfriend! The lyrics, music and video that went along with this track were perfect and ever since I've discovered them, I have been obsessed!

NUMBER 7:

"Northern Boy" by Ruby Sue

This track from one of our regulars Ruby Sue had to be in our top ten. This song is packed full of personality, storytelling and uplifting vibes. It's perfect for summer with its upbeat music and lyrics about falling in love. Ruby's vocals are amazing, knitting together everything into one of my favourite songs from last year. You can find more about Ruby on our website! https://hotpinkmusicuk.wixsite.com/hotpinkmusicblog/ruby-sue

NUMBER 6:

"Gaslight" by Gail

At number six, we've chosen this banger from Gail's debut EP "Sweet Nothings." The whole EP is full of clever, lyric rich songs with her trademark upbeat and unique vibe but this song specifically stood out to me as soon as I heard it.

The track makes me want to dance around my room while singing along, the music and catchy lyrics always getting me into the mood to move. I spoke to Gail about the whole EP in October which you can read here: https://hotpinkmusicuk.wixsite.com/hotpinkmusicblog/post/interview-gail-talks-about-her-new-ep-some-of-the-barriers-she-s-faced-coming-into-the-industry

NUMBER 5:

"Love or Lust" by Alysha

Another one of our absolute favourite tunes from last year was this track from the amazing Alysha. From the EP 'Midnight Rendezvous", Love or Lust combines Alysha's smooth and beautiful voice with funky music that makes me want to get up and move. The lyrics of this song are ultra relatable as well as catchy, making this tune undeniably incredible.

This song would make a great addition to any playlist for any mood.

NUMBER 4:

"Human" by Grace Bland

This song from the brilliant Grace Bland had to be on our list. 'Human' is a beautiful track filled with raw emotion from Grace's clever lyrics and stunning vocals. It also has incredibly catchy music and amazing harmonies. Ever since we discovered this song at Hot Pink Music we've been obsessed! You can read Kays full review of Human here: https://hotpinkmusicuk.wixsite.com/hotpinkmusicblog/post/exclusive-review-grace-bland-human

NUMBER 3:

"Worms" by Mars

From her album "Party Favours" comes Worms from Gracie, whose stage name is Mars. The whole album is completely brilliant, only written in a month and packed to the brim with original pieces of music. Worms however has always stood out to me. The musical elements are divine, so mystical and unique. Mars uses her already stunning voice to create whimsical harmonies and poetic lyrics. We spoke to Mars back in July about this album more and her process was just fascinating, which you can find here: https://hotpinkmusicuk.wixsite.com/hotpinkmusicblog/post/interview-gracie-talks-about-her-one-month-album-and-gender-inequality-in-the-music-scene

NUMBER 2:

"The Hardest Part" by Olivia Dean

This song by the purely talented Olivia Dean rightfully deserves second place on this list. This tune is so perfect in every way, from relatable lyrics, catchy music and her voice sounding just stunning. All of Olivia's music is fabulous, but this song specifically is so emotional while also making me want to dance around the room- making it the right balance. She is definitely one to watch out for.

NUMBER 1:

"Headache" by Gabby Rivers

And finally, at number one, we have "Headache" by the amazing Gabby Rivers. The whole Headache EP that was released in 2020 has been on repeat since I first heard it, but the title track really stands out to me. Every single element of this song is perfect. The music is different to her other tracks, really creating a perfect setting for the song. Gabby's vocals are stunning, showing incredible dynamics and range. The lyrics are not only super relatable but amazingly catchy too. We absolutely adore Gabby's EP and cannot wait for new music from her. You can find more from us and Gabby here: https://hotpinkmusicuk.wixsite.com/hotpinkmusicblog/gabby-rivers

So there we have it, our top ten. We hope that you'll listen to the tunes we've recommended and find your new favourite song while you're at it!
