Firstly, Ruby and I are so happy to see that artists are still creating music and powering through this crisis that we are currently in. Keep creating art, no matter the form. Furthemore, we were especially excited to be contacted by Rowanna, whose song got mine and Ruby's attention immediately, making us want to share it with our readers.

Rowanna, an independent singer/songwriter, recently contacted us here at Hot Pink Music about one of her recent tracks titled ‘Cry My Art Out.’ The song has a very important message behind it, and is something that myself and Ruby feel strongly about. Rowanna expressed to us that the song's meaning is all about a previous relationship and how she stood up to abuse which tried to crush her creativity. However, instead of it crushing her creativity, it fuelled it and allowed her to write this empowering track.

Ingeniously named, ‘Cry My Art Out’ is an Alt-Pop single released on July 27th. Immediately after pressing play, it’s clear that there is an 80s and 90s influence. Almost electro-pop, I am also reminded of artists such as Lady Gaga and Madonna. The track starts out strong, with heavy bass notes and dancey vibes which really sets a scene for the powerful backstory. The use of spoken word before the chorus really gives this track another creative element and is one of my favourite parts of the song.

When the chorus kicks in, Rowanna really starts to showcase her vocals. The runs in the first half of the chorus are perfectly executed. Even though it’s a small detail, the runs really make this chorus complete for me.

After the chorus, the same heavy bass notes from the beginning of the track are utilised again which I love. It brings the song back from the chorus and continues to carry the classic alt-pop genre throughout the song.

The song then continues into the bridge, which is different from other parts of the track. As the lyrics are sung, line by line they increase in pitch and work up a scale which is very effective as the bridge builds up to the breakdown.

The breakdown is clearly segmented with a sudden pause and echoed instruments until a synth can be heard. This synth is then accompanied with a rhythmic, dancey drum beat that then leads to more spoken word.

At the end of the track, I love Rowanna's decision to change key. It’s such a simple way to add personality to a song, yet so effective.

I love so many of Rowanna's decisions within this track. I think she’s done such a great job at expressing herself and telling her story. I can definitely see this song being played on a club night. It’s worth a listen, just like all of Rowanna's other singles. You can find Rowanna and where to listen to the track below.
