The local singer and Hot Pink Music regular, Ruby Sue, has released yet another great track called 'Northern Boy.' Myself and Ruby got a chance to listen to the song before its release, so we could write an exclusive review. We loved the track the first time we heard it and were super excited to share it with our audience! Ruby Sue's last track, ‘prove you wrong’ was a great release, I even did a review of it, so make sure to check it out.
The song begins with a soft guitar chord progression, starting the track with an up-beat and happy vibe. Eight bars in and Ruby starts singing, continuing on the up-beat vibe of the song. There are also a number of other elements that have been added to the song, such as drums, clapping and keyboard. The new elements we haven't heard before give the song lots of variety and lots of interesting texture. The song is mixed brilliantly, giving the song a wonderful balance of Ruby's beautiful voice as well as highlighting the different instruments used. In particular, the drums really add to the song, making it more dynamic. Even though they are simple, it compliments the songs perfectly, bringing out Rubys voice even more.
In terms of lyrics, the song is wonderfully poetic as well as very easy to follow. Not your typical 'love' song, the tune really uses language to create a story, describing a type of relationship that will be very relatable to a lot of listeners. The little references intertwined throughout the song really show how personal it is, and it's really nice as a listener, for a song to be personal to the artist who wrote it. The rhyming throughout the song is also very clever, which shows the lyrics were chosen deliberately and that the choice of words was obviously very though through. Furthermore, the words are incredibly catchy without being repetitive, which means in terms of live performance, it's easy to sing along, something we cannot wait to hear!
Myself and Ruby were actually able to listen to the song before it was recorded, when Ruby Sue was performing it live. So to finally hear the song finished is great! So many different elements have been added to make it a full track instead of just a live song. I can’t wait to hear this final version live, especially when it comes to half way through, when the clapping element starts to come in. It will be a real crowd pleaser when the audience gets to clap along. This song is without doubt one to dance to, in contrast with 'prove you wrong', which makes Ruby and I very excited to eventually hear Ruby Sue's EP when that comes about.
Like always, below is where you can listen to the new track on Spotify, as well as other links to Ruby Sue. We also have a couple of other posts about Ruby here on the blog already, so be sure to check those out too! Thank you to Ruby for giving us an exclusive listen so that the review could come out on the release date and supporting the blog. Go stream Northern Boy and enjoy some new, local, female music!
