Myself and Ruby have decided to create a playlist that is filled with songs, all by female artists. Half of the songs on the playlist are tracks by local artists based in Norfolk, whereas the other half are tracks by more famous female musicians who we love. The playlist is going to be updated at the beginning of every month, where we will add new releases by artists, and other iconic female written songs.
We hope that this playlist will allow you to discover new artists and songs to add to your own playlists.
One of the local artists that is featured on our playlist is Gabby Rivers, a well known and successful Norwich local singer-songwriter. Gabby has released a myriad of songs and recently released her EP ‘Headache.’ Now ‘headache’ is actually one of the songs from gabby that we have featured on the playlist. Headache is an upbeat, funky indie-pop track that is much loved by her loyal fans. It’s the perfect addition to any playlist and is just one of the many great songs Gabby has released. In-particular, the chorus will no doubt get you bouncing around your room, dancing like no one's watching.
A song from a more popular and well-known artist, 1950 by King Princess, is also on the playlist. King Princess is a great female musician who continuously experiments with her music and the way it sounds. As well as being a role model for female artists, King Princess also is an inspiration for the LGBTQ+ community who are trying to break through into the industry.
‘1950’ has the opposite vibe to ‘Headache’ in the sense it helps you chill and mellow out. I personally am such a fan of her King Princesses vocals, for this song specifically, I think her vocals suit it perfectly. ‘1950’ is such an iconic song of hers and is definitely worth an add to any chill playlist.
Another song from a local artist is ‘Hot Pink’ by Let’s Eat Grandma. Well, Let’s eat Grandma are a female duo act that found their success whilst studying in Norwich. They’ve now developed their career and are a lot more successful and well known, after playing festivals such as Coachella, Latitude and British Summer Time fest. It is also worth mentioning that their song ‘Hot Pink’ was on an award-winning album, winning the Mercury Prize.
‘Hot Pink’ is a great, upbeat song that is filled with psychedelic lyrics and feminist undertones. Myself and Ruby have been fans of the duo, and the song, for a while, so much so that we decided to use this song as inspiration for the name of our blog.
Another song that is worthwhile mentioning is Becky Hill ‘Wish You Well Acoustic.’ Becky Hill's name is very well known within the Drum and Bass community, she made her claim to fame by releasing dance tracks ever since her first major appearance on The Voice UK a few years back. The original version of this song is great and a dance-worthy track. However, we decided to feature the acoustic version due to Becky’s beautiful raw vocals that don’t tend to be heard as much in her heavier Drum and Bass tracks. This version really highlights the beauty in her voice, and Myself and Ruby really want others to hear it too. We love this rework of the song and it really does show Becky's voice off in a new way.
Lastly, we have decided to also feature ‘Oh My God’ by Peach Club, another Norwich local all-female band. Peach Club are such a cool, punk riot girl band, all of their songs have such a perfect mix of heavy electric guitar and powerful lyrics to match. Ruby particularly loves this song and is always jumping around her room whilst headbanging to this rocky track. It’s such a statement and a real tune that will definitely be stuck in your head.
We hope that when you listen to playlist we’ve created, you get to listen to some songs you already know and love as well as being introduced to new female artists locally that you’re unaware of. Personally, I love discovering new music and we wanted to give you a place to possibly find your new favourite artist. The playlist is available on Spotify and the link is below. Enjoy listening!
